 Raconteur’s Pattaya Tales by Geoffrey Franklin

Somewhere between an international fantasy world and one of harsh reality, the characters in these wide ranging stories become involved in humourous, dangerous, sometimes violent adventures, set against a colourful backdrop of flora and fauna, festivals, arcane beliefs and ghosts. Here, dreams are often perceived as future indicators and reincarnation is seldom, if ever questioned. Nothing is forever, or quite what it seems to be. The only certainty is life is never dull or grey. These stories are fictional, but truth is often is often stranger than fiction and every good yarn has an essential thread of truth within it. Many of the events in these stories often involved or were witnessed by the author.

Geoffrey Franklin is an English Artist-Writer who studied Art and Design at the Birmingham and Royal College of Art, London. A Pattaya resident for eight years, he has painted many of the delights of South East Asia. Angkor Wat, Cambodia in particular. He is now writing books and short stories based on the strange, often mystical experiences he has encountered in Thailand.

Giant Panda Live in Chiang Mai Zoo

In 2001, The vice-prime minister and minister of defence (a full general Chawalit Yongjaiyut) talked with the president and prime minister of The People’s Republic of China about the giant panda.

He wanted to display giant panda in Thailand. The government of China was glad to give 1 pair of giant panda for friendship ambassador and celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 6 cycle birthday anniversary in 2004. So, that is the reason for the project for panda research and display in Thailand.

The government of Thailand entrusted the Zoological Park Organization to take responsibility for these very rare giant panda. They are on display at Chiangmai Zoo in Chiangmai province.

The airline was established in 1968 as Sahakol Air operating air-taxi services under contract from OICC, an American construction company, USOM and a number of other organisations engaged in oil and natural-gas exploration in the Gulf of Thailand. It began scheduled services in 1986, becoming Thailand’s first privately-owned domestic airline. It re-branded to become Bangkok Airways in 1989. It built its own airport on Koh Samui, which was opened in April 1989 and offers direct flights between the island and Phuket, Hong Kong and Singapore. The airline opened its second airport at Sukhothai Province in 1996. A third airport was built in Trat Province, opening in March 2003 to serve the burgeoning tourism destination of Ko Chang.

The airline made its first foray into jet aircraft in 2000, when it started adding Boeing 717s to its fleet. Up until then, Bangkok Airways had flown propeller-driven aircraft, primarily the ATR-72. It had also operated the De Havilland Canada Dash 8, the Shorts 330 and for a short time, a Fokker F100. The carrier added another jet, the Airbus A320, to its fleet in 2004.

Bangkok Airways plans to order widebody aircraft as part of its ambition to expand its fleet. It wants to add its first widebody jets in 2006 to serve longer-haul destinations such as London, India and Japan and is looking at Airbus A330, Airbus A340 and Boeing 787 aircraft.
